North Lawndale is one of the 77 community areas of the city of Chicago, Illinois, located on its West Side. The area contains the K-Town Historic District, the Foundation for Homan Square, the Homan Square interrogation facility, and the greatest concentration of greystones in the city.

North Lawndale is one of 10 priority communities selected as a part of the initial phase of Chicago’s INVEST South/West commercial corridor improvement strategy.

Oct 11, 2021 · Like most of the Chicago area, North Lawndale has a pretty interesting story to be told. Originally it was named just Lawndale, after a real estate developer in the late 1800s. The name itself was meant to evoke a suburban feel — distant from the noisy city.

May 9, 2024 · Located on the city’s West Side, North Lawndale is where Dr. King campaigned to end slum housing in 1966. The housing was substandard in part because so much of it was owned by people who didn’t live in the neighborhood and thus were removed from the community’s interests.

African Americans began moving into North Lawndale in the early 1950s, some directly from southern states, others displaced from their South Side homes by urban renewal projects. In response, white residents moved out to northern neighborhoods such as Rogers Park .

Dec 12, 2023 · Located on Chicago's West Side, North Lawndale was a bustling community at the start of the 1900s. Sears Roebuck and Co opened its headquarters here in 1904, along with a 3.3million square foot distribution center. More factories opened in nearby neighborhoods and North Lawndale became a destination for factory works. The population boomed.
