Jan 23, 2005 · I plan to run a 1/2" end mill down the slots first then run a 6 flute HSS T slot cutter through to open up the undercuts. What kind of speed should I be running the T slot cutter at. I'm not in a hurry and want the cutter to last.
The cutting parameters of T slot milling cutter | LMM Carbide
Common tool speeds are as follows: High-speed steel tool: 100-150 m/min. Carbide tool: 30-120 m/min. Ceramic tool: 50-200 m/min. Cutting depth refers to the depth to which the tool enters the workpiece each time it cuts.
Adjust the spindle speed and/or feed rate based on your cutting conditions. NOTE: Feed to be reduced by approximately 50% if LOC (length of cut) is over 3XD. The above recommendations are based on ideal conditions; for smaller taper machining centers or less rigid conditions, please adjust parameters accordingly on diameters greater than 12mm.

Use the correct speed and feed rate: The speed and feed rate at which you operate your T-slot cutter can significantly affect the quality of your cut. Generally, slower feed rates and higher spindle speeds are best for achieving clean cuts.
Speed and feed recommendations based a radial DOC of 2/3 width of cutter and dry (no coolant) milling. The Octagon shape is ideal for general facing in 304 and 316 stainless steel. The 45o lead provides chip thinning and overall stability by directing cutting forces into the spindle.
Recommendations for milling armor plate - Practical Machinist
Mar 17, 2017 · We usually use 4 flute end mills for steels, but I see 5, 6, 7 flute options that should yield faster cut times. I think will go to 1/2" diameter for increased rigidity. Most of the material removal will be cutting a step that is .625" deep and 1" back.
