In DnD this is seen as a massive failure as opposed to a nat 20 which is a massive success (both are subject to the whims of the Dungeon master, some dont' do this). Like say you want to jump from a roof to another roof to sneak in a bedroom. THe DM makes you roll an athletics and stealth check.

A nat 1 is already a miss, which is all the complication that should be included with that. Before anything else happens, a nat 1 should be confirmed with a 2nd nat 1. 1 in 400 odds are a bit more rational for complications to happen on top of, as long as they aren't ongoing beyond a long rest. Anything ongoing needs to be doubly confirmed.

Aug 15, 2019 · Most of the people I've played with think it's fun to have some extra bad luck on a 1 and extra good luck on a 20. Once I had a monk accidentally hit himself in the jaw and stun himself for two rounds. Once they were fighting in a giant nest, and every time anyone rolled a one, one of the eggs got broken. Nat 1 penalties can be really situational.

However, you can choose to take such an exceptional roll into account when adjudicating the outcome. It's up to you to determine how this manifests in the game. However, Reliable Talent would bypass this.
