Murasoli Maran (17 August 1934 – 23 November 2003) was an Indian politician and an important leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party which was headed by his maternal uncle and mentor, M. Karunanidhi.

In the 1930s, a young woman called Shanmugasun-darathamal took care of two little boys. One was her son who later came to be known as Murasoli Maran (1934), the other was her brother Dakshinamurthy, who later came to be known as M Karunanidhi (1924).

Nov 23, 2003 · Murasoli Maran was a Cabinet Minister in the Government of India without a portfolio at his death. The then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and many other leaders in Chennai attended his funeral.

Chennai, Nov. 23: Veteran DMK leader Murasoli Maran died here this evening after a 15-month battle for life in the wake of multiple health complications. He was 69. The condition of the Union minister without portfolio worsened over the last two days and he died around 7.10 pm, sources close to Maran’s family said.

Murasoli Maran died aged 69 on 23 November 2003 at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. At the time of his death he was a Cabinet Minister, Government of India. The then Prime Minister Vajpayee, and an array of leaders across party lines attended his funeral in Chennai.
