Phidias or Pheidias (/ ˈfɪdiəs /; Ancient Greek: Φειδίας, Pheidias; c. 480 – c. 430 BC) was an Ancient Greek sculptor, painter, and architect, active in the 5th century BC. His Statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Until recently, it was thought that Phidias died in prison shortly thereafter, but now it is believed that he was exiled to Elis, where he worked on the Olympian Zeus. A “workroom,” thought to be Phidias’s, has been found in Olympia.

According to the great ancient Greek traveler Pausanias, the words "Pheidias, son of Charmides, an Athenian, made me." Pheidias also desiged statues of Athena inside the Parthenon and in the monumental gateway that served as the entrance to the Athenian Acropolis.

Phidias was arrested and found guilty. It is uncertain what happened afterwards; Plutarch mentions that Phidias died in prison, while another historian, Philochorus, says that Phidias left Athens before his arrest and moved to Olympia, where he had his workshop.
