A French youngster tags along with British troops as they enter the city of Lille in northeast France, liberating it after four continuous years of German occupation. During those years, everything of value had been taken from the city and much of its population, including teenagers, had been sent away for forced labor in Germany.

Lille, France, was a major manufacturing center and fortress city on the Deûle River near the Belgian border. In the 1914 Race to the Sea, General Ferdinand Foch attempted to convince British commander Sir John French to hold Lille. The British failed and the city was lost on October 8, 1914.
