Kherson witnessed heavy fighting in the first days of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (Kherson offensive). [45] As of 2 March the city was under Russian control, [ 46 ] [ 47 ] and as early as 8 March the Russian FSB was reported to be tasked with crushing resistance.

Kherson was the first major Ukrainian city to fall during the invasion, and the only regional capital that Russia managed to capture in the 2022 invasion, though the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk had been controlled by Russian-backed separatists since 2014.

On 30 September 2022, Russia, amid an ongoing invasion of Ukraine, unilaterally declared its annexation of areas in and around four Ukrainian oblasts — Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia.
