Oct 15, 2020 · Summit Lake in Akron, Ohio, is a glacial landmark shaped like a lopsided figure eight. It sits along a continental divide, so its waters flow both north toward Lake Erie and south toward the Mississippi River. “Not many cities have this kind of asset,” says Kyle Lukes, ASLA, a senior landscape architect with Environmental Design Group in Akron.

4 Eastern Continental Divide—A continental drainage divide extends east-west across northern Ohio. Surface water north of this divide flows northward to Lake Erie, eventually over Niagara Falls into Lake Ontario, and into the Atlantic Ocean.

Continental Divide The Ohio & Erie Canal had to travel over a continental divide, which created a major obstacle during construction. Today, the land still parts the water, sending Cuyahoga River water north to Lake Erie and on to the Gulf Of Saint Lawrence, while the River water flows south to the Ohio River and on to the Gulf Of Mexico.

Dec 12, 2023 · The river flows to the southwest, through thick forests and past rich farm fields, until it reaches the more populated urban areas near Akron, Ohio. At this point, the river hits an east-west continental divide and turns sharply northwestward, forming the bottom of the "v."

Summit Lake is the practical dividing point, or the north-south continental divide for the canal system. Summit Lake is a natural lake which, prior to 1800, was surrounded by a swamp. The lake had to be modified during the construction of the canal by lowering it by 9' so that it had the same elevation as the Tuscarawas River.

Many routes were under consideration, but a continental divide in northern Ohio created a major obstacle. Geography and politics both affected decisions about the canal’s route. At the divide’s highest point, today’s Summit County, the canal would need additional sources of water.

Shortly, you exit the legal boundary of the CVNP and cross the Akron City Limits. Soon, you enter Sand Run Metro Park (SMP) and the Cascade Valley Metro Park (SMP). Thereafter, you climb and cross the northern continental divide near downtown Akron.

The restoration of this valuable habitat is based on historical surveys of Ohio, which showed prairies near other natural features found within the park: the Continental Divide and bogs.
