Philadelphia residents have been warned to brace for a largescale workers' strike designed to shut down key infrastructure, such as garbage removal, starting Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nearly 10,000 city workers in Philadelphia who collect trash, answer 911 calls, maintain city pools and perform other jobs went on strike Tuesday after contract negotiations broke down. District Council 33 President Greg Boulware said the city hadn’t agreed to a high enough wage increase, WPVI-TV reported.

The explosion, which occurred Sunday morning on the 1900 block of West Bristol Street, killed one woman and left two others hospitalized, including a longtime employee of the Philadelphia City Council. The blast partially collapsed three rowhomes and forced dozens of nearby residents to evacuate.

Daniel McCarty, the Philadelphia Fire Department's executive officer, said there was extensive damage to about five homes, including collapsed structures.

Philadelphia will be getting its first new professional team since the Union in the MLS was founded in 2008 and began play in the 2010 season. The WNBA coming to the city is a big get as the league is growing quickly and will be looking to bring more excitement to the City of Brotherly Love.

All three new teams have NBA ownership groups, and each paid a $250 million expansion fee — about five times as much as Golden State did a few years ago.
