President Donald Trump's administration has directed U.S. prosecutors to criminally probe local officials who resist immigration enforcement efforts, intensifying a sweeping crackdown that Trump launched the day he took office.

Mark Kelly of Arizona, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R., S.D.) saying they are willing to provide the votes for legislation to address the country’s “pressing border security and immigration needs.

The House voted 263 to 156 to approve the Laken Riley act, sending the measure to Trump for his signature. The measure would make it easier for federal immigration officials to detain and deport those without legal status who are charged with specific crimes.
