Homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that left a man dead late Thursday, Sacramento Police Department officials said.

The shooting took place around 10 a.m. in the 300 block of First Street, not far from where the high school is.

At least 71 people died in homicides in 2024, most of them in shootings. That number includes three fatal shootings by police and a man who died of longtime complications of a shooting in 2004.
