Valentine’s Day might be lonely for the singles out there, but here’s an upside: In some cities, renting a studio by yourself might save you enough money to put toward finding “the one.” A new report from RentHop ranks the most and least affordable locales for singles by comparing the median list price of a studio apartment against the median “nonfamily” income in the 50 most populous U.

Most people who live alone know they’re paying a premium compared to their friends who split rent with partners or roommates. But in no city is this “singles tax” more expensive than in New York City.

Nationwide, solo renters pay an extra $7,562 per year for a one-bedroom unit compared to couples who split rent with their partners. That premium, known as the singles tax, is up by more than $450 from a year ago.
