(Dennis Jansen / The Dallas Morning News) Dallas City Hall was built in 1978 and designed by architect I.M. Pei. The 7-story building follows the "brutalist" style pioneered by Le Corbusier.

City Hall, Energy Plaza, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center and One Dallas Center, and the original control tower at Bush Intercontinental Airport. In 1983, Pei won the Pritzker Prize.

The event was seen as an opportunity to bring people to Downtown Dallas, and to hopefully spark interest in the I.M. Pei-designed City Hall building, which had opened six years earlier.
