Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894 under President Grover Cleveland. The holiday was to be observed on the first Monday in September annually, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

But like our veterans, who also merit daily respect and admiration, workers get only one official day on the calendar — Labor Day.

Veterans of all ages are asked to walk in this year's Labor Day Parade in downtown Muskegon. Please park at Heritage Landing and, between 9-10:40 a.m., a shuttle bus will take you to the staging area.
