Tonight, the Astros grasped for runs like a drowning man gasps for his last breath of air. The seven runs they scored in the first three innings equalled their total production in the last six games combined. The Astros are still alive with a beating heart, after all.
Valdez walked his first two hitters. Andy Ibáñez lined a sinker up the middle for an RBI single. Spencer Torkelson flared a changeup down the right-field line; it fell fair and bounced into the seats for a ground-rule double, putting men on second and third. Wild pitches allowed both to score.
With a tantalizing pitching matchup of young aces like Hunter Brown of the Astros and Tarik Skubal of the Tigers, it’s not surprising runs were hard to come by Tuesday night. For Houston, it’s becoming all too commonplace.
