Amazon has unveiled Vulcan, its first warehouse robot with a sense of touch, designed to handle inventory with precision while reducing strain on human workers.

Vulcan, a robot with tactile senses, is a step toward automating more of picking and stowing work done by humans inside Amazon’s fulfillment centers.

Vulcan, therefore, is a major breakthrough. The robot combines tactile sensors with advanced AI, allowing it to identify objects based on sight and feel. Amazon compares its latest engineering feat to a human’s ability to rifle around a drawer and identify items—keys, for example—based on touch.
