In addition to Alvarez's setback, the Astros received other bad news on Saturday, placing outfielder Chas McCormick on the injured list with a strained left oblique. The Astros recalled utility player Shay Whitcomb to take McCormick's spot on the active roster.

Yordan Alvarez’s hand injury is worse than it originally appeared, as a small fracture that was previously believed to be a muscle strain was discovered.

The Astros are shutting down Alvarez again after an MRI exam showed a “very small fracture” in his right hand that is only “60 percent healed,” general manager Dana Brown told reporters. Alvarez, who hit .210 with three home runs through his first 100 at-bats of the season, hasn’t played since May 2.
