The Texas Senate approved a bill early on Saturday to redraw the state's congressional maps at the behest of President Donald Trump in an effort to flip five U.S. House seats held by Democrats to Republicans.

Rep. Cassandra Garcia Hernandez, D-Dallas, praised Alvarado for her attempts to delay the vote and said Democrats would not be "backing down," reflecting intentions by Texas Democrats and civil right groups to challenge the map in court. President Donald Trump praised Patrick for his effort to get the new map approved.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of 13 Texas residents, states that the redrawn districts in the new map — which Gov. Greg Abbott says he’ll “swiftly” sign into law — are racially discriminatory and violate voter protection laws.
