Canucks president Jim Rutherford admitted during Tuesday's announcement of Rick Tocchet's exit that he never heard back from Quinn Hughes after calling the defenseman to inform him of Tocchet’s departure.

Quinn Hughes and Rich Tocchet had a great relationship and the former was a loud proponent for his head coach remaining in Vancouver. However, the Canucks decided to go another way, with the two parties splitting Tuesday morning.

Quinn Hughes joining the Devils may no longer be a fan’s wildest dream. During Vancouver’s front office’s end of season press conference, Canucks general manager Jim Rutherford was asked about when he is going to start working on a contract extension for superstar Quinn Hughes, who has two more seasons remaining on his contract.
