The U.S. has officially designated a powerful gang coalition in Haiti as a foreign terrorist organization, raising concerns the move could deepen the country’s humanitarian crisis.

The U.S. State Department on Friday designated two powerful Haitian gangs as terrorist groups. The agency listed the Viv Ansanm coalition, which consists of more than two dozen of Haiti's best-armed criminal groups,
