Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) called on the FBI Tuesday to conduct a counterintelligence threat assessment of files connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in order to determine whether a foreign actor could use them against President Trump or other prominent Americans.

The lawmakers cite a provision known as the "rule of five" that requires government agencies to "submit any information requested of it."

The federal grand juries that indicted Jeffrey Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges did not hear directly from any of the alleged victims in the case, Justice Department officials said in support of their request to unseal transcripts of the usually secret proceedings.
