Navy honors the Jolly Rogers with uniforms for Army-NavyThis marks the second time Navy football has honored the Jolly Rogers. In 1962, the Midshipmen, formerly known as the Cadets, wore a helmet design in a 34-14 win against the Army.
Hardin’s most famous uniform innovation came in 1962 when he had Jolly Rogers flags placed on the front of the Navy helmets with “Defeat Army” written in Chinese on each side of the helmet.
In 1981, a new USS Kidd, the first of its eponymous class of warships, entered service and inherited the tradition (and permission) to hoist the Jolly Roger until it was given to Taiwan in 1998.
