Irmo Police say two officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a SLED investigation, after a suspect dies in custody.

Authorities say when officers arrived, the vehicle took off, leading to a short pursuit that ended near the Dollar General on Broad River Road.

The Richland County coroner has identified a man who died in police custody after an early morning arrest last week.

The pursuit ended by a Dollar General store on Broad River Road, where the “altercation” occurred with the man who was alone in the vehicle.

Byron Jackson, 45, of North Augusta died while in police custody with the Irmo Police Department, according to the Richland County Coroner.
