It's been nearly two months since President Trump silenced Voice of America. NPR's Scott Simon speaks to Jay Sophalkalyan, who says the broadcasts were a lifeline when he was growing up in Cambodia.

In March, President Trump ordered government broadcasters such as Voice of America and Radio Free Asia be defunded. That executive order is being challenged in court, but the airwaves remain silent.

But their plight is truly horrific. Ukraine has identified almost 16,000 names of people lost in a gulag of 180 prisons in Russian-held Ukraine and in Russia itself, as far away as Siberia.
