These are two budget dial-bore gauges we’ve been using for the last 10 years. The black plastic case contains a Mitutoyo 511-106, 2- to 6-inch range dial-bore gauge with 0.0001-inch increments.

Last month we honed the cylinder bores on our International 7.3L IDI diesel engine. This process took the glaze off the walls and left a good surface for our new piston rings to contact.

Using a dial-bore gauge, we set the zero point in the middle of the spec at 2.3250. This rod measured 2.3252, which was just on the wide side of the spec.
