Greenland's government is pushing a bill to ban foreign political donations ahead of its election after the Trump administration doubled down on its push to acquire the autonomous territory that's part of the Danish kingdom.

Greenland plans to ban foreign and anonymous donations to its political parties after the Trump administration has said the US president is serious about taking control of the vast Arctic island. The government of Greenland on Monday put forward an emergency parliamentary proposal to safeguard the country’s “political integrity” ahead of elections due by April 6.

Greenland is not for sale, Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen said on Monday, after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week that President Donald Trump's interest in acquiring the island was "not a joke".

Greenland is a self-ruling territory in the Danish kingdom, which means policymakers in Nuuk control most domestic issues. Denmark, which oversees defense and security policy on the mineral-rich Arctic island, is injecting 14.6 billion kroner ($2 billion) to ramp up defenses.
