Why The Maple Leafs Recalled Defenseman Dakota Mermis And Sent Fraser Minten Back To Marlies
Once able to return, Toronto placed Mermis on waivers in hopes he'd clear and play in the AHL. The defenseman was claimed by the Utah Hockey Club on Dec. 12 and played one game with the club before going back on waivers in early January. The Maple Leafs claimed the defenseman off of waivers and were able to assign him to the Marlies.

The Maple Leafs dipped into their depth on Monday. Ahead of their practice in Calgary, the Leafs recalled defenceman Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies. The move comes after fellow D-man Oliver Ekman-Larsson departed the Leafs 4-3 win in Edmonton against the Oilers on Saturday because of a lower-body injury.

The net-minder has made one NHL appearance over the course of his career, taking the ice for the New York Rangers in a 6-3 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 17, 2018. He came into the game in relief of Henrik Lundqvist, who allowed five goals on 27 shots.
Maple Leafs' Dakota Mermis: Summoned from AHL
Mermis was recalled from AHL Toronto on Monday. The Maple Leafs returned Fraser Minten to the minors in a corresponding move. Mermis will provide the big club with an extra defender after Oliver Ekman-Larsson (lower body) suffered an injury in Saturday's 4-3 win over Edmonton.
