Pope Francis' funeral at St. Peter’s Square drew hundreds of thousands of mourners and a roster of global leaders. After the Mass, the Catholic Church laid the 88-year-old pontiff to rest.

Some 250,000 people flocked to the funeral Mass and tens of thousands more lined the motorcade route, clapping and cheering “Papa Francesco” as his simple wooden coffin travelled aboard one of his old popemobiles to its final resting place at St. Mary Major Basilica on the other side of the city.

Pope Francis, the pontiff whose acts of love and humility rippled through his papacy, was laid to rest in a service he deliberately simplified.
