A judge has declared a mistrial in the case of five former members of Canada's world junior ice hockey team accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel.

According to Canadian law, a mistrial can be declared if there is a "real danger that trial fairness has been compromised".

The trial of five members from Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team charged with sexual assault is set to begin in London, Ontario, on Tuesday. Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, Dillon Dubé, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote have all been charged with sexual assault in connection to an alleged incident following a Hockey Canada fundraising event in 2018.
