Imane Khelif, whose gold medal at last year’s Paris Olympics caused a global scandal, has been banned from competing in all future World Boxing events in the women’s category unless the Algerian can provide proof of being biologically female.

The 26-year-old Algerian welterweight was at the center of Olympic controversy regarding her gender at the Paris Games, beginning when her first-round opponent, Italy’s Angela Carini, quit after 46 seconds. Carini eventually backtracked and apologized for causing the uproar.

Olympic gold medalist Imane Khelif will be banned from all upcoming boxing events until the boxer undergoes newly mandated genetic sex testing, the organization said.
