With the 28-year-old set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of 2024-25, the Avalanche really have from now until the March 7 trade deadline to decide on Rantanen's long-term future with the club.

The Colorado Avalanche may soon face a defining decision on star forward Mikko Rantanen with the forward playing the final year of his contract with the Avs. According to TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie, in a trade list published at the outlet at the start of 2025,

The Colorado Avalanche and Mikko Rantanen are at an impasse in contract negotiations, as the star winger’s demands diverge substantially from the team’s maximum offer. Rantanen, playing in the final season of a six-year, $55.5 million deal while carrying a $9.25 million cap hit, is set to enter unrestricted free agency in July.

That being said, Connor Bedard really needs that elite winger or running mate to play in the top-6 and on the power play. That could be Mikko Rantanen of the Colorado Avalanche if contract talks don't go the Avs' way.
