Greenland plans to ban foreign and anonymous donations to its political parties after the Trump administration has said the US president is serious about taking control of the vast Arctic island. The government of Greenland on Monday put forward an emergency parliamentary proposal to safeguard the country’s “political integrity” ahead of elections due by April 6.

Denmark’s Prime Minister has insisted Greenland is not for sale and called for a robust response from her European Union partners should US President Donald Trump press ahead with his threat to take control of the island.

Greenland is not for sale, Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen said on Monday, after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week that President Donald Trump's interest in acquiring the island was "not a joke".

Greenland is a self-ruling territory in the Danish kingdom, which means policymakers in Nuuk control most domestic issues. Denmark, which oversees defense and security policy on the mineral-rich Arctic island, is injecting 14.6 billion kroner ($2 billion) to ramp up defenses.
