A measure to keep the government funded and avert a shutdown has passed in the House, but has only a few days to pass in the Senate and prevent widespread pains for taxpayers.

House Republicans passed a stopgap bill to keep government funding at current levels until September. Now the measure heads to the Senate, where its fate is uncertain.

The House voted 217 to 213 on a bill to fund the federal government through September and avoid a shutdown that would have started this weekend. All but one Republican voted “yes,” joined by just one Democrat.
