At least three people are dead and seven others, including two children, are missing after a "panga"-style fishing vessel washed ashore near San Diego on May 5, authorities said. Crews responded to a report of the overturned vessel off the coast of Del Mar shortly after 6:30 a.m. local time, officials told KABC-TV.

Five Mexican nationals are facing charges in what prosecutors say was a human smuggling event, after a small boat carrying over a dozen people capsized off the coast of San Diego​.

Two Mexican citizens were arrested and charged with human smuggling resulting in death, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of death or life in prison.
