Ocelots once roamed much of South Texas. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, records indicate that the ocelot lived in the southern Edwards Plateau Region and along the Coastal Plain.

Conservationists estimate that, in the United States, only 50 to 80 ocelots remain in the wild in two tiny population pockets in deep South Texas.

And Texas' ocelot population — the only ocelots remaining in the United States — has eroded to perhaps 50 animals.
