DALLAS — The first glimpse of Texas' Education Savings Account Program, a major legislative priority for Governor Greg Abbott, has emerged, sparking debate across the political spectrum.

Under SB 2, families enrolling their children in private school would receive $10,000 per year, or $11,500 if the student has a disability, through what’s called an education savings account. Supporters say it would be “the largest day one ESA program in the nation.

The proposal would create education savings accounts and give families $10,000 a year in state funds to pay for their children’s private education.
