SAALBACH, Austria (Reuters) -Swiss Franjo von Allmen won men's downhill gold at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Saalbach on Sunday, with compatriot Alexis Monney clinching bronze and defending champion Marco Odermatt finishing fifth.

Franjo von Allmen has won gold in the men’s downhill at the Alpine skiing world championships as the Swiss team swept the speed events.

Breezy Johnson is the fourth American woman to win the downhill at the World Alpine Skiing Championships, marking the first major victory of her career. Johnson, the first racer, put down a time and then waited in the finish area for more than an hour to see if anybody would beat it. No one did.

Her top speed of 86 mph (138.51 kph) was among the fastest ever recorded by a woman in an Alpine skiing race. The 38 yards (35 meters) that she leaped off the big Panorama jump midway down matched how far the men leap off the famed Hundschopf at Wengen in Switzerland.

American Breezy Johnson turned on the afterburners to scorch to a shock gold in the women's downhill at the World Ski Championships in Saalbach on Saturday, while returning veteran teammate Lindsey Vonn finished 15th.
