Commuters and travelers in the northwest of England were hit with major travel disruption Friday after a car plunged from a bridge onto the main rail line between Manchester and Liverpool, one of the country's busiest.

Police said a car crashed overnight at Regent Road roundabout in Salford before landing on tracks beneath, closing railway lines between Newton-le-Willows and Manchester. The crash has also been affecting trains between Wigan North Western and Manchester.
