Both are floating in the Weddell Sea. “The iceberg is around 170 km in length and 25 km wide, and is slightly larger than the Spanish island of Majorca,” according to the agency.

It's the world's biggest iceberg A23a hasn't always held the title. In 2021, for instance, it was supplanted by iceberg A-76, which broke from the Ronne Ice Shelf, also in the Weddell Sea.

Iceberg A-76 calved from the shelf into the Weddell Sea last week, an event first spotted by the British Antarctic Survey and confirmed by the U.S. National Ice Center.

This – unlike the massive iceberg – raises the sea level. The recent breakage occurred in Larsen C Ice Shelf and took more than 12% of its total area.
