A street sweeper kicked up a cloud of dust on the new stretch on the Howard Frankland Bridge Monday, as crews put the finishing touches on the expanded version of Tampa Bay’s critical 6-mile artery that is scheduled to open to drivers Tuesday morning.

The new bridge is built higher to better avoid storm surge spilling over onto the roadway, like what happened during last year's hurricane season.

The Howard Frankland Bridge, known by many as the "Frankenstein" is a daily struggle for commuters. But on Tuesday, a brand new bridge opened for Southbound traffic—something we haven't seen in decades.
