A Minecraft Movie, which stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa, lands on a major worldwide box office chart after less than a week in theaters.

Goldstein is optimistic that “Minecraft” will help turn the box office tides. Fortunes have already begun to shift. Prior to this weekend, box office revenues were nearly 11% behind last year and 40% behind 2019, according to Comscore. Now the gap has shrunk to 5.3% behind 2024 and 35% behind 2019.

This past weekend, following a first quarter when the industry fretted that moviegoers forgot about going to the movies, Warner Bros and Legendary revived the global and domestic box office with the Jared Hess -directed A Minecraft Movie, which saw a $163 million U.S.-Canada opening, $150.7M abroad and $313.7M worldwide.
