President Donald Trump’s National Guard directive was issued as he touts his efforts to assert control over D.C. and muses about deploying troops to other major U.S. cities.

The order requires Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to create a specialized unit within the D.C. National Guard “dedicated to ensuring public safety and order in the nation's capital.”

An executive order released on Monday directs the creation of specialized Guard units to quell civil disturbances in each state and seeks civilian volunteers to assist federal agents in Washington.
