Lionel Messi has won the Club World Cup three times and has the chance to win a fourth time as he will captain Inter Miami in the summer of 2025.

The news follows FIFA’s decision to remove Club Lèon from the tournament, less than three months ahead of its commencement in June.

Mexican club León was expelled by FIFA this month for breaching tournament rules as it has the same owner of another team taking part — Pachua — leaving one slot open at the 32-team event. FIFA said late Sunday that it has drawn up plans for a playoff game between LAFC and América to fill that place but is awaiting the outcome of at least one legal case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport before confirming it will take place.
