One of the largest harmful algae blooms recorded along the Southern California coast has led to the illness and death of thousands of marine mammals and birds in recent months.

Researchers say a minke whale found in the Port of Long Beach and a young gray whale in Huntington Beach both died due to domoic acid toxicity.
