The United States has extended its ban on flights to Haiti’s capital until Sept. 8 because of escalating gang violence.

The United States on Tuesday, March 11, banned flights to Haiti’s capitol Port-au-Prince. According to the US administration under the leadership of President Donald Trump, the move followed the worsening gang violence situation in Haiti.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s announcement extends a ban on U.S. flights to Port-au-Prince that began in November after gangs opened fire on three commercial planes.

A U.S. educated economist and former head of Haiti’s Central Bank assumed the presidency of the country’s embattled transition council on Friday, pointing fingers at the economic elite and blaming “the cannibal” of chaos Haitians are living in on the country’s collapsing economic system.

Fritz Alphonse Jean, an economist and former central bank governor, replaces Leslie Voltaire in the rotating presidency of the transitional presidential council, formed in 2024 after a violent gang siege of the capital that forced then Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign.

Amid intensifying gang violence and recent reports highlighting the disintegration of security in Haiti, the United Nations has called for urgent international support to stabilise the country.

The Federal Aviation Administration is extending its ban on U.S. jetliners flying into Haiti’s capital until September.
