we have a very shallow, well protected bay and the paddle to Caladesi Island is about a 15 minute trip on a normal day, the water at the island is typically an emerald green with a white sand bottom, ample shells, over 100 species of birds migrate thru the island, dolphins and fish are common, rated #1 beach in North America 2008 winds and tides and other factors can complicate things, so ask before you go, our objective is not just you survive, but you have fun as well. let me try to address your questions 1. We have parents take children out to Caladesi island on almost a daily basis. 2. If you have not kayaked before, simply ask we would be happy to give you a quick how to. 3. Is it dangerous? I would think the drive to our shop will be the most hazardous part of your day. 4. Alligators, no fresh water on the island so no gators have ever been seen there. 5. Sharks, yes this is salt water, however the bay is very shallow and warm not conducive for large predatory sharks, no history of any shark attacks in this bay , ever. The most common seen here is the bonnet head [ world record 28 lbs.- 3 feet ] and is very shy, not considered a threat to people. 6. Anything dangerous? yes, lots of things but no zombies,, yet. This is not a theme park, it is a state park it is real Florida. In 23 years at this location we have never had a serious injury, just band aid stuff, however you are renting a boat, your safety is your responsibility, not something I can personally guarantee.
