Silly question, but what exactly do you do in these excursions? Do you just stand around for 3 hours and look at the sky?

It was very windy and cold the night that we went. We spent time outside for a bit, but kept going back inside the bus to warm up. Our guide spent most of the time outside, and when he saw the lights beginning to happen, he came inside to let us all know. Of course we then all went running out to try and get photos. But there is a lot of time spent just sitting around on the bus waiting for the magic to hopefully happen - and of course, that isn't a given that it will! Don't know if you realize, but for the most part, you don't actually see the vivid colors of the Northern Lights with the naked eye! Once you learn what you are looking for, you can recognize the streaks of light in the sky when the Northern Lights are beginning to form, but you don't actually see the vivid colors except in the photographs. And you need to be able to have either a camera or phone that can shoot the photos in "night mode"with long exposure in order to capture the colorful images - so be properly prepared! We actually saw them 3 out of the 4 nights we were there in December, so hopefully you will get lucky too! One we were just walking down by the waterfront heading back to our hotel and noticed the streaks in the sky. So just keep watching the sky while you are there if the night is clear!!

A:
As in food and drink in Iceland? If so, yes it is expensive there but it’s an amazing country and worth every cent to visit. So much to see and do.
Q:
Is it possible to drive yourself to see the northern lights ? Where would i get more information or directions for this ? Thanks !!
A:
Yes, you can -- basically, just drive out of town and try to find a spot with a clear sky and little artificial light, and in a cold night you have a good chance to see them. Not in summer …

Yes, you can -- basically, just drive out of town and try to find a spot with a clear sky and little artificial light, and in a cold night you have a good chance to see them. Not in summer (May to August), though, when it does not get dark enough. We used an app (there are several) for a preview of sun activity for the coming hours and days. The more activity, the more northern lights, statistically speaking.
