For off peak season (before Memorial Day, and after Labor Day), it shouldn’t be hard to get a spot. You can reserve it online on the SC state parks website.

We went at the end of June of 2018. We did the nighttime turtle walk. It was very informative and we actually got to see a turtle laying her eggs.
