Our family saw Hubbard Glacier calving in multiple places last July 4, 2019 and we were on the cruise ship, not an excursion boat. The glacier is much larger than we expected (thankfully) and it was loud.

We were all day getting there (could see from a distance for some time) and then leaving although only at the glacier about 2 hours. We saw no other cruise ships in or out, so must have been a light traffic day. Had plenty of time to see the glacier.

Is there another company apart from booking the cruise boat shore excursion?

There is a smaller boat that the only way to get on the excursion is to book through the cruise line. It was well worth it.
