Do you think it’s worth doing the visit without a guide? Or it’s that kind of place where a guide is a game changer?
A:
We went without a guide , and it was fine . Of course a guide always adds that more information to make it a more valuable experience

I had booked thru Expedia with "Rome Your Way Tours", but they had a minimum group quota and it wasn't met but we didn't get notified till the day before the trip! I searched for private tours and "Through Eternity Tours" was very well rated (Frommers & Rick Steve's also recommend them). At the last minute they were able to arrange for our private tour and I'm so very thankful it worked out that way. They picked us up in private sedan at our hotel , did a fabulous tour, and we got sunburned so our driver noticed and stopped by a pharmacy to get us burn cream! It was worth the extra cost for the private tour.
